Selling on LinkedIn

How to sell digital products on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn works for products that help people do their jobs better. Post short stories from your own work, invite people to comment or message you for the product, and keep the link in your profile's Featured section. Postomate writes and publishes those posts for you.

How selling on LinkedIn works.

  1. 1

    People are here for work

Products that save time, win clients or build skills fit naturally. Products for hobbies mostly don't.

  2. 2

Your profile is your shop window

LinkedIn's Featured section can hold a link to your product, with a title and image, right on your profile.

  3. 3

    Conversations sell

On LinkedIn, “comment and I'll send it” or “message me” starts a conversation that a buy button wouldn't.

Posts that sell on LinkedIn.

Professionals respond to specifics: numbers, real situations, lessons learned the hard way.

  1. 1

A lesson from your own work

What happened, what you changed, what you'd tell someone starting out. The most reliable LinkedIn format.

  2. 2

    A short framework

Three or four steps for a common work problem. Easy to save and share with a team.

  3. 3

    A clear opinion

Something you believe that others in your field don't. It's how the right people notice you.

Example LinkedIn posts.

Invented products, to show the format. Your posts are written from your own product page.

Example: a freelance rate calculator

I charged $300 a day for my first two years freelancing. Then I did the math: income goal, plus 30% for tax and tools, divided by the days I actually bill. The answer was $460. If you'd like the sheet I use, comment “rate” and I'll send it.

The rule: A lesson from your own work. The ask is “comment” or “DM me”, never “buy now”.

Example: a SQL course for marketers

A marketer on my team used to wait four days for a data request. After two weeks of basic SQL, she answered the same kind of question herself in 20 minutes. You don't need to become an analyst. You need about six commands. DM me if you'd like to see the course she took.

The rule: A lesson from your own work. The ask is “comment” or “DM me”, never “buy now”.

Example: a portfolio template

The design portfolios that got interviews weren't the prettiest. They answered three questions on the first screen: what was the problem, what did you do, what changed. If you'd like the case study structure I recommend, comment “portfolio”.

The rule: A lesson from your own work. The ask is “comment” or “DM me”, never “buy now”.

Rules for selling on LinkedIn without being that person.

  • Story first, product last

Lead with what happened. The product belongs in the final line, if at all.

  • Ask for a comment or a message

Not “buy now”. A comment or DM keeps it a conversation, which is how LinkedIn works.

  • Short lines, real numbers

One or two sentences per line, and specifics instead of adjectives. People skim.

  • Reply to everyone who comments

Every reply is another chance to help, and conversations keep a post in front of people.

Questions.

Can you sell digital products on LinkedIn?

Yes, especially products that help people at work: templates, guides, courses and coaching. LinkedIn has no shop for them, so people link from their profile's Featured section and invite comments or messages from posts.

Where do I put my product link on LinkedIn?

In your profile's Featured section, where it shows with a title and image. Many sellers also share it in a reply to people who comment asking for it.

What kind of digital products sell on LinkedIn?

Anything that makes someone better or faster at their job: client trackers, sales templates, hiring guides, skills courses and career coaching.

How does Postomate handle the call to action on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn posts from Postomate ask people to comment or message you, never to “buy now”. It keeps the post about the reader's work, not your product.

Paste your product link. We’ll post to LinkedIn for you.
